How to verify a doctor is in-network with Medicare

Confirm a provider accepts your specific Medicare plan before booking.

Time: ~8 minutes Result: Confirmation that the provider accepts your Medicare plan and that the visit will be covered.

Step-by-step

  1. Step 1: Know which Medicare plan you have

Medicare has three flavors: Original Medicare (Parts A + B), Medicare Advantage (Part C, run by private insurers), and Medigap supplements. Each has different network rules. Check your Medicare card or your Medicare Advantage plan card.

  2. Step 2: Use Medicare's official Care Compare tool

For Original Medicare, the official directory is medicare.gov/care/care-compare. Search by specialty and ZIP code. The tool flags providers who 'accept assignment' (charge no more than Medicare-approved rates).

  3. Step 3: For Medicare Advantage, use your plan's directory

Original Medicare's directory does NOT show whether a doctor is in-network with your Medicare Advantage plan. Each MA plan has its own network — call the number on your MA card or use the plan's online directory.

  4. Step 4: Use GProv's Find Care with the Medicare filter

https://www.gprov.com/find-care lets you filter by 'Medicare' or your specific MA plan. The directory shows in-network providers who also have GProv profiles.

  5. Step 5: Call the provider directly to confirm

Even after directory verification, call the provider's office and confirm they are currently accepting new Medicare patients. Directory data lags by 30-90 days; the front desk has the current answer.
