How to find a doctor that accepts your insurance
Step-by-step process for verifying a provider is in-network and booking through GProv's directory.
Step-by-step
-
Step 1: Have your insurance card ready
Locate your insurance card or a digital copy. You will need the plan name (e.g. 'Blue Cross PPO'), the member ID, and the group number. These tell GProv exactly which network rules apply.
-
Step 2: Use GProv's Find Care directory
Open https://www.gprov.com/find-care and filter by your specialty (e.g. cardiologist, dermatologist), your city, and your insurance payer (Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Kaiser, Humana, Anthem, Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE). Results show only providers in-network with your plan.
-
Step 3: Verify in-network status with the plan
For each provider you're considering, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask: 'Is Dr. [Name] in network for my specific plan?' Networks change frequently, so this 60-second call protects you from surprise out-of-network bills.
-
Step 4: Check for required referrals
If you have an HMO or Medicare Advantage plan, your primary care provider may need to write a referral before the specialist visit is covered. Call your PCP first.
-
Step 5: Confirm the appointment type is covered
Telehealth, second opinion, and in-person visits are sometimes treated differently. Ask the insurer to confirm coverage for the specific visit type — and whether a copay applies.
-
Step 6: Book through GProv
Use the 'Book' button on the provider's GProv profile. The booking flow records the visit type and insurance details for the provider's billing team.
